Climate Climacteric

Climacteric: a major turning point or critical stage

A window has opened in which we can begin to work towards mitigating climate change.  We’ve seen such opportunities squandered before and must make hay before this one closes.  Recent studies have found that the most extreme climate predictions are proving to be the most accurate. We have you turn this opp opportunity into sustained action.  Bill McKibben, author, activist and co-founder of 350.org, is leading a series of talks on climate change called “Do the Math.”  They’re currently touring the Pac Northwest and will soon be traversing the country.  I urge you to check it out so that you can Do the Math for yourself.

Again With the Horses and Sparrows

“If you feed horses enough oats, it will pass through their digestive systems and their droppings will provide enough leftover oats to feed the sparrows.” – John Kenneth Galbraith

It’s pretty inconceivable (And yes, I think I know what that word means…) to me that we’re still arguing whether Trickle-down works. If you’re reading this, you’re probably a sparrow (like me).

If all that seems a little unsavory, you might enjoy this great new video which drives home the points from one of President Obama’s recent speeches.

Monday Music Blogging: Ray Lamontagne’s “Hold You in My Arms”

I’ve got a mountain of half written posts that I’ve started recently, but am now back in school, so it may stay a bit thin around here for a while.  For now, here’s a soul filled tune from Ray Lamontagne.  The song, and Ray’s intro, speak to the crazy way we go about life.  Speaking of which, it’s never a bad time to reconsider your approach.

Hold You in My Arms – Ray Lamontagne

When you came to me with your bad dreams and your fears
It was easy to see that you’d been crying
Seems like everywhere you turn catastrophe it reigns
But who really profits from the dying
I could hold you in my arms
I could hold you forever
I could hold you in my arms
I could hold you in my arms forever

When you kissed my lips with my mouth so full of questions
It’s my worried mind that you quiet
Place your hands on my face
Close my eyes and say
Love is a poor man’s food
Don’t prophesize
I could hold you in my arms
I could hold you forever
And I could hold you in my arms
I could hold you forever

So now we see how it is
This fist begets the spear
Weapons of war
Symptoms of madness
Don’t let your eyes refuse to see
Don’t let your ears refuse to hear
Or you ain’t never going to shake this sense of sadness
I could hold you in my arms
I could hold on forever
And I could hold you in my arms
I could hold forever

Sunday Night Music Blogging: Society by Eddie Vedder

Tonight’s selection started out as a Friday night post, but I forgot to publish.  It seems serendipitous as today brings two starkly contrasted events which fit the song’s message. Today we suffered another horrifying attack as six people were killed at a Sikh temple outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Curiosity rover touched down safely on Mars and will now begin its quest for signs of life.
We have two paths laid out in front of us.  One leads us forward with science and progress.  The other is a descent I’d rather not consider.  It’s your call.

Where do we go from here?

Today’s selection is a solo effort from Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder.   The video is embedded below the lyrics.  Please enjoy, but also take a little time to chew on it.

Society  (From the “Into the Wild” soundtrack)

It’s a mystery to me
We have a greed
with which we have agreed
You think you have to want more than you need
Until you have it all you won’t be free
Society, you’re a crazy breed
I hope you’re not lonely without me
When you want more than you have
You think you need
And when you think more than you want
Your thoughts begin to bleed
I think I need to find a bigger place
‘Cause when you have more than you think
You need more space
Society, you’re a crazy breed
I hope you’re not lonely without me
Society, crazy and deep
I hope you’re not lonely without me
There’s those thinking more or less,
less is more
But if less is more how you’re keeping score?
Means for every point you make your level drops
Kinda like it’s starting from the top,
you can’t do that
Society, you’re a crazy breed
I hope you’re not lonely without me
Society, crazy and deep
I hope you’re not lonely without me
Society, have mercy on me
I hope you’re not angry if I disagree
Society, crazy and deep
I hope you’re not lonely without me
